FAQs

Manchester solar FAQs: sixteen plain answers

These are the practical questions that come up once someone in Manchester starts thinking seriously about solar: from pigeons and snow to selling the house. Each answer is short; the linked guides go into the detail.

Some questions have whole guides of their own. If yours is about one of these, start there:

The answers below are general. For anything specific to your house, especially planning in a conservation area or a listed building, the council is the authority, and an MCS-certified installer's survey is the only way to confirm what a roof can take. Terms used in the answers are explained in the glossary.

The questions

How many solar panels does a Manchester house need?

As many as the best slope holds, within the budget, rather than a fixed number. With 400-watt panels, eight panels make 3.2 kW, which on a south-facing Manchester roof at 35° would generate about 2,835 kWh a year, using PVGIS figures.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days in Manchester?

Yes, at a lower rate. Panels respond to daylight, and bright cloud still lets a good share through. The yearly PVGIS figures for Manchester are built from satellite records of the city's actual sky, so cloudy days are already counted in them.

Does snow stop solar panels working?

While snow covers them, yes. On a pitched roof it usually slides off within a day or two as the glass warms. Do not climb onto the roof to clear it: a few lost winter days make little difference to the yearly total.

How long do solar panels last?

The Energy Saving Trust says 25 years or more, with the inverter, the box that converts the power for the house, usually needing replacement after around 12 years. Budget for one inverter replacement over the life of the panels.

Do I need to clean solar panels in Manchester?

Rarely. Rain rinses most dust and pollen away, and Manchester has plenty of it. Bird droppings or moss on a low-pitched roof are the exceptions. Use a specialist or a long-reach brush from the ground, never a pressure washer, and do not walk on the panels.

Can pigeons nest under solar panels?

They can, and city pigeons often try. The gap between panels and roof is sheltered and warm. Mesh fitted round the edge of the array keeps them out and is easiest to add at installation; ask for it to be priced in the quote.

Will solar panels affect my home insurance?

They should be declared to your insurer, as with any alteration. Many policies cover them as part of the building; some ask for the MCS certificate. Check before the installation date rather than after.

Do solar panels add value to a Manchester home?

There is no reliable Manchester figure. A buyer will look at the generation record, the age of the system and its paperwork. Keep the MCS certificate, the electrical certificates and the warranties together, because a buyer's solicitor will ask for them.

How big a system can I fit without the grid operator's permission?

Up to 16 amps per phase of inverter output, which is 3.68 kW on the single-phase supply most homes have. SP Electricity North West is notified after connection under G98. Above that, the installer applies first under G99.

What does a solar installation involve on the day?

Usually scaffold one day, panels and wiring over one or two days, and scaffold down later. If the scaffold stands on the pavement, Manchester City Council needs a permit, which runs for at least 28 days.

Can I install solar panels myself?

You can fit a compliant plug-in panel yourself. A roof system wired into your home is electrical work under the Building Regulations, and you need an MCS-certified installation to receive export payments, so in practice a roof system needs an installer.

What happens to my solar panels if I move?

They stay with the house and are normally included in the sale. Transfer the export payment arrangement and any warranties to the buyer, and hand over the paperwork. If the system was bought with a loan, check what the agreement says about selling.

Is solar worth it if I only use electricity in the evening?

Less than for someone at home in the day, because more of the output is exported instead of used. A battery or an export tariff changes the balance. Set your roof's output from our explorer against your own meter readings before deciding.

Are there Manchester solar schemes run by the council?

The main help is GMCA's Warm Homes: Local Grant, for eligible lower-income households across Greater Manchester, with rules including an EPC of D to G for owners and routes such as income below £36,000. We found no current council-run group-buy for solar when we checked on 3 November 2026.

How much has solar cost per kW in the North West?

In 2025/26 the government's figures give an average of £2,021 per kW for systems up to 4 kW and £1,768 per kW from 4 to 10 kW, for MCS-certified installations in the North West. VAT on installed solar is 0% until 31 March 2027.

What is Manchester doing about solar?

The council's climate plan aims for a zero-carbon city by 2038 and says the city needs almost 400 megawatts of solar by 2030, alongside 78,850 retrofitted homes. Rooftops on homes, schools and businesses are part of that.
